Gratitude is both an attitude and a practice or discipline. It is one thing to feel grateful, it is another to give thanks. In other words, gratitude is what you feel, thanksgiving is what you do! We are taught in scripture to do both. Throughout scripture we are commanded to give thanks or express our gratitude to God, both in good times and in difficult seasons. Paul instructs us to “give thanks in all circumstances, for that is the will of God for you in Christ.” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). I like to think of gratitude as a muscle that needs to be exercised or a habit that needs to be developed. The first step in practicing gratitude is to identify something to be grateful for, and the second is to realize that there’s someone to thank behind the blessing.
